Biography

Jennifer Keates-Baleeiro received a Bachelor of Science at Tufts University graduating cum laude in 1989 with a double major in Biology and Child Development. Subsequently, she received a Master of Arts in Psychology at New York University, graduating with honors, with election to the Psi Chi Society in 1992.

Employment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC stimulated an interest in pediatric cancer patients. A medical degree from MCP-Hahnemann Medical School was awarded in 1999. She met her husband, Carlos Eduardo Oliveira Baleeiro, during medical school and they married at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manhattan on Nov. 11, 2000. Her family now extends to Salvador da Bahia, Brazil.

A pediatric internship at Schneider Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park, New York was followed by residency at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. While her husband pursued a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Keates-Baleeiro pursued a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at the University of Michigan. The family moved to Tennessee and she continued her research in a murine model of acute myeloid leukemia at Vanderbilt University, winning a Children’s Cancer Research Award to fund her research.

Dr. Keates-Baleeiro has lived in Chattanooga, TN since 2007, working in the Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at Children’s Hospital at Erlanger. Currently her academic interests include pediatric oncology clinical trials through the Children's Oncology Group, sickle cell research trials with MAST/ADVENTRX and late effects of pediatric hematology-oncology patients. She has two children, Sophia Katharine and Carlos Paxson Keates Baleeiro. Her personal interests include horseback riding and dance (Irish, ballet and jazz).
